When I first came to Costa Rica I had never lived with a host family before. By chance, I was placed with a family that had been applying to host a student for a while, but never had one before. I think that’s among the main reasons that had made this experience so peculiar: it was a first experience for all of us. My room is located right next to the kitchen, a small room decorated in pink, as it was the daughter’s room before I occupied it. The first time I talked with Señora Rita we negotiated the costs and the rules. She seemed quite nervous and indecisive about having a student, and as I came last minute, she was not expecting someone to come. Happily, I brought all my stuff to my new place and decided to go through with this new experience of living with a host family. There are a number of positive things about being the first student to live with this family, but at times the circumstance has presented challenges. I have to say that for this occasion, being a native Spanish speaker made the difference; we have talked and negotiated again and again. I have learned the family dynamics, their moods, and the little details that bother them. I assume that they as well have learned much about me, and after four months of living with them we have developed a very close relationship. One of the challenges that I will always recall was that they didn’t want to give me a key. It was so strange to me when I realized that there was only one set of keys for the whole house and they came to open the door for me every time I was getting home, just as they do with other family members. Of course that means that there is always someone in the house available, but this started becoming a problem every time I was coming home late. At first, I tried to persuade them talking as much as I could without disturbing them to try to get a set of keys. After a while of not being able to change their mind, I decided to just let it be and knock at the door every time I got home, even when this was kind of annoying on both sides. One day, out of nowhere, Señora Rita decided that it was time to give me a set of keys, which relieved me a great deal. I guess they got tired of having to wake up in the middle of the night, mostly during the weekends when I was going out for gatherings and parties with friends. Señor Rodrigo, Señora Rita’s husband, just turned eighty-two years old a few weeks ago. I was invited to share a birthday cake with the host family and some other relatives that came to celebrate the occasion. On that day everybody was happy and I took the chance to take some pictures. Señor Rodrigo is an adorable person, always happy and an optimist ready to learn more on his spiritual journey. They all belong to the Evangelical Church. The only challenge is that Señor Rodrigo tends to forget things, and he has been asking me the same questions again and again whenever we meet in the morning for breakfast or at any other time of the day, mostly for the meals. I don’t mind responding, although sometimes I change my response just to see how he reacts and to change a little bit our quotidian conversation. From time to time, his mind becomes clearer and he starts telling me some very nice stories from his youth. I consider it a great privilege to be living with that family. There is so much to learn from the stories of their youth and their struggle in life that for privacy reasons I couldn’t include here. However, they have always maintained their dignity and an optimistic spirit towards life, which is one of the most enriching aspects of my life here in Costa Rica. To conclude, I would like to encourage anyone who decides to live with a host family to bring the experience to the maximum. There is a lot to learn from living with other people both, from oneself and from the other members of the family, and the potential of that relationship is one that can last for the rest of your life.
